Community Breakfast at Augustana Lutheran Church

Love Fridge at Augustana Lutheran Church 

The Love Fridge at Augustana is a community effort to address food insecurity in a practical, direct way. Augustana hosts the fridge by the congregation’s front entrance on 55th Street. It is available 24/7, for community members to donate food items and to take items that have been donated. UChicago students, staff or faculty who would like to volunteer for a week of work with The Love Fridge in front of Augustana can contact Sarah Hoehn, sarahhoehn1@gmail.com. You can also volunteer to help keep the Fridge clean and supplied through The Love Fridge mutual aid group, thelovefridge.com.

Love Fridge at Rodfei Zedek

The Love Fridge at Rodfei Zedek is a community effort to address food insecurity in a practical, direct way. Rodfei Zedek hosts the fridge by the congregation’s front entrance at 5200 S. Hyde Park Blvd. It is available 24/7, for community members to donate food items and to take items that have been donated. You can volunteer to help keep the Fridge clean and supplied through The Love Fridge mutual aid group, thelovefridge.com.

The Hyde Park Kenwood Food Pantry

The food pantry, located at Hyde Park Union Church, provides fresh fruit and vegetables, frozen meat/fish and non-perishable groceries to roughly 1200 people per month. Residents of zip codes 60615, 60653 and 60637 may come pick up food twice a month. Volunteers can help set up the “grocery store,” welcome neighbors, pack individual orders, bring groceries outside, restock and put away inventory, unload deliveries, and/or pick up rescue food from the local Jewel-Osco store.  Please see https://hpkfoodpantry.org/volunteer/ for details and to request further information, or contact Margy Mitchell at mmm17@uchicago.edu or call HPUC at 773-363-6063. The Kenwood United Church of Christ Soup Kitchen

The soup kitchen, located at Kenwood United Church of Christ, offers breakfast and a hot noon meal 9am to 1pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday each week to anyone in need. Our case manager is available on Tuesdays and Fridays from 9am-2pm. In addition, attendees are now offered access to a hot shower and medical clinic for those in need. A staff person from the church is available for spiritual counseling as requested, and on Sundays, a meal is shared with members from the Kenwood Church congregation. Community Luncheons at LDS Chapel

The Church of Jesus Christ, Latter-day Saints (LDS chapel) hosts a community luncheon every Saturday at 11:00 unless there is an event such as a wedding or funeral. Please use the entrance from the church parking lot. For more information, contact Barbara Maloof (bmaloof@hotmail.com).

Free Food Market 

The council has also provided funding for Woodlawn Greenhouse Collective which operates a food pantry at First Presbyterian Church. This Free Food Market is open Thursdays from 10am-12pm and offers a wide variety of groceries and fresh foods to the community. Please call the church office at (773) 363-0505 to volunteer. Market Boxes

The Council has also assisted in the distribution of Market Boxes with Ecosystems of Care. Market Box is a volunteer-driven mutual aid project that bulk-buys food from small farms and distributes it for free to over 400 households per month across the South Side of Chicago. This effort was borne out of the pandemic and is also based out of the First Presbyterian Church.

Vineyard Church Food Pantry

This year the council had the opportunity to help support the Vineyard Church Food Pantry. This food pantry is open to all every Wednesday and the third Saturday of each month from 2-4pm.
